Detroit Roots, Chef‑Driven Brunch
Dime Store opened in 2014 because three friends — Jeff Alexander, Larry Kahn & Ann-Marie Murphy — thought Detroit deserved a brunch spot that didn’t phone it in. We wanted inventive, scratch-made breakfast, brunch & lunch in a place that felt like your favorite neighborhood hangout.
No frills, no pretense — just damn good food, strong coffee & a full bar for when your brunch needs a little extra kick.
We set up shop inside Detroit’s historic Dime Building, originally built in 1912 as the Dime Savings Bank Building — home to a then-groundbreaking idea: a savings account you could open with just a dime.
Later renamed Chrysler House, the building’s history inspired our name — Dime Store — as a nod to both the Dime Building and the classic five-and-dime shops that were a staple of mid-20th-century city life.
Those dime stores were casual, lively spots where you could grab a quick bite at the lunch counter — just like our vibe today. You’ll even spot mid-century design touches throughout our space that tip the hat to that era.
A True Scratch Kitchen
From day one, we’ve been a true scratch kitchen. Fresh, hand-cut fries and hash? Every day. Housemade gravies, sauces, dressings, marinades, braises, soups — and yes, even our jam. We bake buttery biscuits from scratch. We slow-cook Sy Ginsberg corned beef in-house. Our burger? A premium custom beef blend created just for us by Fairway Packing.
We source locally roasted Zingerman’s coffee, locally grown Stoney Creek Mushrooms & work with top-tier local vendors because better ingredients = better food. Always.
Oh — and the duck in our fan-favorite Duck Bop Hash? We confit it in-house over multiple days, the old-school way.
Almost everything we serve — from breakfast to brunch to lunch — is made from scratch, by hand, every single day.
Bold Flavors & Chef's Specials
Behind the scenes, our Executive Chef Josh Taylor has been with us since day one and remains instrumental in defining Dime Store’s bold, inventive brunch menu. Our chefs are classically trained, wildly creative & totally unafraid to throw curveballs — think General Tso’s Benny, Chicken Shawarma Hash or that legendary Duck Reuben.
At our Rochester Hills location, Executive Chef Aris Nueva Espana leads the kitchen with the same chef-driven spirit, joined by longtime team member and now partner, Chef George Sleator. Chef’s Specials run as long as they’re crushing it — and trust us, they usually do.
Meet the Owners & Chefs
Dime Store is powered by a team that loves brunch as much as you do.
- Larry Kahn, Ann-Marie Murphy & Jeff Alexander founded Dime Store in 2014 with a dream of creating Detroit’s best brunch spot — chef-driven, scratch-made & welcoming from day one.
- Josh Taylor, our Executive Chef, has led the kitchen since day one, crafting chef-driven dishes that are anything but ordinary. He trained at the French Culinary Institute and brings 30+ years of experience from award-winning kitchens across the Midwest.
- George Sleator & Mitch Freem — longtime Detroit team members — became owners in 2024, helping expand Dime Store to Rochester Hills. George trained at The Stratford Chef School in Ontario.
- Aris Nueva Espana, Executive Chef at Rochester Hills, keeps the creativity flowing with scratch-made specials. He’s a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New York.
Together, they bring deep roots in Detroit’s food scene — and a serious love for breakfast, brunch & lunch.
