Chef-driven brunch, scratch-made from day one

What started in a tiny kitchen turned into hundreds of specials, countless regulars and one simple goal: make breakfast, brunch and lunch the way we think it should be.

What We're About

Dime Store is a scratch-made, chef-driven breakfast, brunch and lunch restaurant in downtown Detroit, built on the idea that the little things matter.

From how food is prepped to how it’s served, we’ve always focused on care, consistency and doing the work ourselves instead of taking shortcuts.

The result is food that feels familiar without being predictable, served in a place where regulars and first-timers are welcomed the same way.

Detroit Roots, Since 2014

Dime Store opened in 2014 because three friends — Jeff Alexander, Larry Kahn and Ann-Marie Murphy — thought Detroit deserved a brunch spot that didn’t phone it in. We wanted inventive, scratch-made breakfast, brunch and lunch in a place that felt like your favorite neighborhood hangout.

No frills, no pretense, just damn good food, strong coffee and a full bar for when your brunch needs a little extra kick.

We set up shop inside Detroit’s historic Dime Building, originally built in 1912 as the Dime Savings Bank Building and home to a then-groundbreaking idea: a savings account you could open with just a dime.

Later renamed Chrysler House, the building’s history inspired our name — Dime Store — a nod to both the building and the classic five-and-dime shops that were once part of everyday city life.

Those spots were casual, lively places where you could grab a quick bite at the counter. That same energy still lives here today.

A True Scratch Kitchen

From day one, we’ve been a true scratch kitchen.

Fresh, hand-cut fries and hash? Every day. Housemade gravies, sauces, dressings, marinades, braises, soups and yes, even our jam. We bake our biscuits from scratch. We slow-cook Sy Ginsberg corned beef in-house. Our burger is a custom blend created just for us by Fairway Packing.

We source locally roasted Zingerman’s coffee, locally grown Stoney Creek Mushrooms and work with top-tier local vendors because better ingredients really do make better food.

And the duck in our fan-favorite Duck Bop Hash? We confit it in-house over multiple days, the old-school way.

Almost everything we serve is made from scratch, by hand, every single day — because it tastes better and it matters.

Inventive Dishes & Chef's Specials

From day one, Dime Store’s menu has been shaped by Executive Chef Josh Taylor, whose training, creativity and curiosity helped define our approach to brunch.

Josh established the foundation for the dishes we’re known for, pairing solid technique with playful ideas and a willingness to throw a few curveballs. Longtime favorites like General Tso’s Benny, the Duck Reuben and Pollo Loco Hash all grew out of that mindset.

Chef’s Specials have always been a big part of the experience here. They rotate, evolve and stick around as long as guests keep ordering them — which is often longer than expected.

It’s how we stay curious in the kitchen and keep the menu feeling alive.

That chef-driven spirit still guides how we cook today, grounded in technique, balance and a refusal to play it safe.

The People Who Started It

Dime Store is locally owned and operated by people who care deeply about this place, the food and the guests who walk through the door.

Founded in 2014 by longtime friends Larry Kahn, Ann-Marie Murphy and Jeff Alexander, Dime Store was built with a simple goal: create a Detroit brunch spot that took breakfast seriously without losing its sense of fun.

More than a decade later, the owners are still hands-on and involved every day.

Executive Chef Josh Taylor has been part of Dime Store since the very beginning. A graduate of the French Culinary Institute with more than 30 years of experience, Josh helped shape the menu, the creative direction and the standards that continue to guide our kitchen.

Over the years, a talented team of chefs, cooks and front-of-house staff has built on that foundation — contributing to a deep archive of specials and helping create the kind of place people come back to again and again.

At its core, Dime Store is still what it’s always been: owner-operated, familiar and unpretentious — a place where regulars are known, newcomers are welcomed and the food doesn’t cut corners.
